Alcoholism and drug addiction are diseases, which affect
a person's mind and body. Both alcohol and drugs have
addictive properties and when abused can often times
result in addiction. The National Institute on Alcohol
Abuse and Alcoholism cites alcoholism as having four
main symptoms: "Physical dependence", "craving",
"loss of control" and "tolerance".
The symptoms for drug addiction are also very similar
to these.
Where normal people are able to take or leave a drink
or a drug, alcoholics and drug addicts have to have
these substances in order for them to feel like they
are functioning normally. When alcoholism or drug addiction
is involved a person has an intolerable need to get
"high" and continue to drink or use even past
the point of oblivion. Alcoholism, also known as alcohol
addiction, and drug addiction are chronic diseases,
which eventually lead to major life problems and death.
As a disease, addiction is more powerful than the person
who has it, and like cancer or any other illness, takes
over the person's life, even if he/she wants to stop.
Each year millions of people are overcome by the disease
of alcohol and drug addiction, however there is still
hope.
Alcoholism and drug addiction are not scientifically
curable, nor is there any proof that they will go away
over time. Instead alcoholism and drug addiction can
be treated through the use of recovery programs, therapy,
12-step groups and various types of treatment. Because
alcoholics and drug addicts are not able to use in moderation
the only seemingly successful solution is complete abstinence.
For many people suffering from alcoholism and drug addiction
abstinence seems impossible, but with the help of people
who have struggle and overcome these diseases, recovery
slowly begins to seem possible.
Sometimes the alcoholic or drug addict is unwilling
to get help and family members turn to interventions
or other professionals to try and get them help. In
addition, family members look to programs such as Alanon
and Alateen so that they can disengage from the destructive
behaviors of the active alcoholic or drug addict. Since
these are family diseases, each family member has his/her
own experience in relation to recovery.
